This horse used to be so calm… is she just challanging me?
She is fairly new to us and was a rescued horse, so I don’t know much about her except she is 15 years. One day she bucked me off while we were cantering. After I flew off she kept bucking. So after checking everything, I figured her saddle must be too tight, fixed it and cantered her again until she listened.
-A week later, she is still great with my kid, but every time I’m on her she wants to run and stomps her feet and wants to go, go go. But I am not cantering her until I trust her at a trot again. Once she calms down I will canter her again.
When we first got her she was so calm with me, and since that bucking incident, she is ‘rearing to go’, ok not quite, but you get the picture…
Am I doing anything wrong? I hosed off her saddle blankets and let them dry and today, I KNOW her saddle was way too loose…
Could be a number of things-
Better food?
Not this fit in a while?
Not ridden in a while?
New or different tack?
Sore back?
What you really need to do is look at what you have changed in her world.
Has she bucked since the first time? She could’ve just been feeling really good. My horse chucks in a buck if I haven’t ridden her for a few days, because she’s feeling a bit spunky. Lunging first helps with this, or more frequent riding.
If the feed has changed, she’s probably loving the extra energy and wants to get it out.
If you are riding her quite often and she is consistently on the go, she might just be an energetic horse. She would recognise when your offspring is on her back and take extra care. I’ve seen many horses do this.
If you think it might be the tack, get it checked by a saddler because this can cause more harm the longer it is left.
Could she have put her back “out” when she bucked?? You mentioned that she is fifteen, maybe she has hurt or strained something and that is why she is edgy with you and the extra wieght? Bowen therapy is great for this.
I’m not sure if any of the above answers are correct, but I hope I’ve helped a little
