The Headwaters Region of Ontario

Recently, the City of Calgary in Alberta, Canada was named as one of the top ten cities in North America for fly fishing, by Forbes. Well, if Calgary is one of the top ten cities, then Orangeville, Ontario must be one of the top ten towns.

Orangeville, Ontario is located in “The Headwaters” region on the Niagara Escarpment and is just an hour’s drive from downtown Toronto. It is not a suburb of the big city and instead, the Town of Orangeville is surrounded by forests, farm land and of course, streams and rivers. Aptly named, “The Headwaters Region” is where several major rivers begin their flow to the Great Lakes. These rivers all offer up fantastic fly fishing opportunities.

The Credit River begins as a small brook near Orangeville and as it approaches Caledon, becomes a larger stream where Brown Trout will take a fly. The Forks Of The Credit Provincial Park is a well known destination just minutes from downtown Orangeville for anglers and hikers alike.

To the west, the Grand River begins its journey near Dundalk, Ontario and in the summer months, Smallmouth Bass and Pike can be fly fished for as it flows south of Highway 9, about ten minutes from Orangeville. Another ten minute drive and your at the tailwaters of the Shand Dam, an area that is annually stocked with thousands of Brown Trout.

A ten minute drive east of the town puts you on the headwaters of the Humber River, once known for its Atlantic Salmon runs. Today, there are stocking programs going on in an attempt to reintroduce Atlantics to the Humber. Whether that program is successful or not, there are plenty of trout to fly fish for. Both Brook and Brown trout call these waters their home. If it’s larger fish you are after, the Humber Springs Trout Club offers fly fishing only on their three ponds for Rainbow Trout which can go up to 5+ pounds.

Approximately 20 minutes north east, you can be on the Nottawasaga River which can offer some wonderful Steelheading opportunities. In between, there are various small creeks and streams that are not difficult to access in the spring months.

Almost right in town is the Island Lake Conservation Area. Although the majority of angling done here is spin and baitcasting, the fly fisher can try for some Pike, Bass and panfish either from shore or in a boat or canoe.

With all these fly fishing opportunities, don’t you think Orangeville sounds like one of the best fly fishing towns in North America?
